Muhammad, what set him apart from his compatriots? | Author: Safaa Abdel-Aziz

Muhammad, all respects, peace and blessings are upon him.

When married his first wife?

At the age of 25, Muhammad married a widow named Khadijah who was 15 years older than Muhammad. Khadijah was a rich merchant of Makkah (Mecca), and Muhammad had managed some of her trade affairs.

Who proposed his first marriage?

It was she who proposed marriage when she realized how honest and how trusting Muhammad is.

Khadijah remained his beloved wife and closest friend and companion all her life till her death 25 years later.

Khadijah bore him six children, of whom four daughters survived.

What set him apart from his compatriots?

Until he was 40, Muhammad led a very ordinary life, showing no signs of the Prophet in the making that he was suddenly to be.

What set him apart from his compatriots was

His absolute truthfulness, responsibility, reliability and honesty,

His sense of justice and compassion for the poor, oppressed and downtrodden,

As well as his total refusal to worship any idol or do anything immoral

He was popularly acclaimed for these qualities.

What was his title before his Prophethood?

The titles on everybody's lips for Muhammad were "Al-Sadiq, Al-Amin".

Al-Sadiq means the Trustworthy.

Al-Amin means the Honest.

His wisdom before his Prophethood

In addition, Muhammad's wisdom was also acknowledged by his tribe.

Once, while repairing the Ka‘bah (the Holy place in Mecca), various clans of the Quraysh (Muhammad's tribe) disputed violently as to who should have the honor of placing the Black Stone in its place. As they were about to unsheathe their swords and go to war, they made the Prophet their judge and their arbitrator.

Herein, the situation was very critical; many families of his tribe were ready to fight and each family members claim that they only have the right to put the Black Stone.

How he brought them peace and avoids blood shedding?

According to their customs and culture, this was a good reason to fight and to shed endless blood.

However, the Wise Muhammad brought them peace.

He placed the Black Stone on his cloak and asked all the clan chiefs to hold its edges and raise it, and then he placed the Black Stone in its appointed spot with his own hands.

The whole tribe was very happy with this peaceful solution.

The Angel Gabriel

At the age of 40 years, and all of a sudden, the Angel Gabriel descended unto Muhammad with the first few verses of the Quran.

Muhammad, who had no idea about what the Angels are, was very afraid; he went very fast to his beloved wife.

How his wife described his characters

Herein, a testimony to Muhammad's character was given by his wife Khadijah as she comforted him at the time when the first Revelation came to him.

Muhammad said unto her: ‘I fear for my life. ‘

She replied:

‘By no means!

  • I swear by God that God will never lose you.
  • You join ties of relationship,
  • You speak the truth,
  • You bear people's burdens,
  • You earn for the poor,
  • You entertain guests, and
  • You help against the vicissitudes which affect people's rights.'
